Compress JPEG to 50 KB

Compress JPG or JPEG to a maximum of 50,000 bytes in your browser. This page starts with JPEG output selected; keep that setting for JPG-only forms and compare detail before downloading.

Auto keeps JPEG inputs as JPEG and uses WebP for other inputs when supported. JPEG fallback uses a white background.

A little help getting the right result

Check Your Upload Requirements

Requirements differ by form and year. This tool checks a maximum file size; it does not guarantee acceptance or set exact dimensions.

What to checkBefore you compressBefore you upload
JPG-only uploadsKeep JPEG selected in the output format controlConfirm the downloaded .jpg and image/jpeg type
Transparent PNG or WebP inputExpect transparent pixels to become white in JPEGInspect edges and the white background
50 KB limitCheck the form also allows the resulting dimensions and minimum sizeAt most 50,000 bytes, not exactly 50 KB
JPEG-only 50 KB (50,000-byte) compression pipeline showing PNG alpha flattening over white and DCT quantization under 50,000 bytes.
Keep JPEG selected for JPG-only forms. Transparent input is flattened over white and encoded with lossy JPEG quality settings. The 49,100-byte output is illustrative; actual size and clarity depend on your image and browser.

How to Prepare Your Image in 3 Steps

1

Select or Drop Image

Choose a supported static JPG, PNG or WebP file up to 15 MB and 24 megapixels. Animated images and PDF files are not supported.

2

In-Browser Compression

Your browser tries quality and dimension settings within its processing limits. Time depends on the file and your device; a matching result is not guaranteed.

3

Download Verified File

Download after checking the result against your destination’s file type, size and dimension requirements.

How compression works

Choose the right output format

Use JPG when your form asks for a photograph in JPEG format. JPEG replaces transparent areas with white. Use WebP when the destination accepts it and you need a smaller file or transparency.

PNG is supported as an input. Downloads are JPEG or WebP; this tool does not export PNG or PDF.

Small enough, and still readable

Compression can soften details and reduce pixel dimensions. Check faces, letters and signature strokes in the comparison before downloading. File size in KB and image dimensions in pixels are different requirements.

For a strict 20 KB maximum, this site checks against 20,000 bytes. See why that differs from 20 KiB.

Supported inputs are static JPG, PNG or WebP files up to 15 MB and 24 megapixels. Before compression, the working image is limited to 12 megapixels; larger sources are reduced proportionally even if a generous byte limit is selected. The search may reduce dimensions further. Some images cannot reach the selected maximum within the time, attempt and minimum-dimension limits. The tool does not pad a smaller result to an exact size or enforce a minimum file size.

Still getting an upload error?
  • Check the destination’s required file type. A small WebP file will not work in a JPG-only field.
  • Check both minimum and maximum file size. A result under 20 KB may also be below a required 10 KB minimum; this tool enforces a maximum only.
  • Check the required pixel dimensions, crop, background and photograph date. This compressor does not set an exact width, height or DPI.
  • If the result is blurry, crop away unnecessary background in an image editor first, then try again. Choose a larger target only if the destination allows it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I compress a JPG to 50 KB?

Choose a supported JPG or JPEG, leave JPEG selected and keep the 50 KB maximum. The browser tries encoder quality settings and may reduce dimensions. It enables download only for an output at most 50,000 bytes; compare fine details before saving.

Is this JPEG compressor different from the image-to-50 KB page?

Both use the same 50,000-byte ceiling. This page starts with JPEG selected, while the general image page uses automatic JPEG/WebP selection. Keep JPEG selected when your portal accepts only JPG; you can still change the format control yourself.

Can I turn a transparent PNG into a 50 KB JPEG?

Yes, you can try a supported static PNG or WebP as input. With JPEG selected, transparent areas are flattened onto white because JPEG cannot store an alpha channel. Review edges and background after conversion. JPEG encoding is lossy, and reaching the limit is not guaranteed.

Will renaming a WebP to .jpg or choosing 50 KiB meet a 50 KB limit?

No. Renaming a file does not change its encoded format. Choose JPEG output and check the actual download. This tool uses 50,000 bytes for 50 KB; 50 KiB is 51,200 bytes and exceeds that limit. It does not pad smaller files or enforce a portal minimum.
